Kathrine Johnson, Mary Jackson, and Dorothy Vaughan, three African American women that worked for NASA in the 1960s, broke the barriers of racism and gender stereotypes by using their intelligence to help launch the first American into space. They helped pave the way for other women to also perform the jobs that were thought to be only done by white men.
